A Women’s Day Reflection from Behind the Camera
Every maternity session begins in a slightly different way.
Sometimes a couple arrives excited and full of energy, talking about baby names and nursery plans. Sometimes there is a quiet calmness in the room, as if they are both still processing the incredible fact that their lives are about to change.
As a maternity photographer, I spend a lot of time observing these moments. Long before the camera clicks, there is already a story unfolding.
With International Women's Day, I often find myself reflecting on these stories and the many women I meet through my work.
Pregnancy is not just a stage before a baby arrives. It is a chapter where something remarkable happens to a woman’s perspective on life.
The Pause Before Life Changes
Pregnancy creates a rare moment of pause.
Life is still moving forward- work continues, routines remain busy, and there are endless things to prepare before the baby arrives. But at the same time, there is an awareness that something important is about to begin.
During maternity sessions, I often notice how mothers instinctively place their hands on their belly without even thinking about it. It is a small gesture, but it speaks volumes about the connection that already exists.
In those moments, it becomes clear that motherhood does not begin at birth. It begins much earlier, in quiet thoughts, small movements, and the growing anticipation of meeting someone who will change everything.
What the Camera Often Reveals
One of the things I love most about maternity photography is how it captures emotions that people don’t always notice in themselves.
Through the lens, small details suddenly become meaningful. A soft smile when a mother talks about feeling the baby kick. A thoughtful expression while imagining the first time she will hold her child.
These moments are never staged. They happen naturally.
Photography simply gives them a way to be remembered.

But in every case, there is a common thread, a deep sense of care for the life growing within them.
That is what maternity photography captures best.
It preserves the moment when everything is about to change, yet everything still feels full of possibility.

Being invited to photograph this stage of life is something I never take for granted. Every maternity session reminds me how meaningful it is to document the beginning of a family’s journey.
